Tute Virtual Coffee Morning recap – September 12, 2025

Written by Natalie Hollins,

Topic: Easing the transition back to routine

Friday, September 12th | 10:00–11:00 AM

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first coffee morning of the new school year. For those who couldn’t make it, here’s a quick recap of what we covered.

We began by welcoming families back after the summer and recognising that this time of year can bring mixed emotions: excitement, nerves, and everything in between. Our theme was easing back into routine and reminding each other we’re not alone in the juggle.

Key discussion points

Routines matter: “A good day starts the night before.” Many parents found visual planners, checklists, and small countdowns useful to prepare children for the shift back to school.

Emotional readiness: Returning to school isn’t just about timetables and stationery. Children may feel anxious, excited, or uncertain. Storybooks, journaling, and gentle conversations can help them process their feelings.

Encouraging independence: Following Maria Montessori’s advice, “Don’t do for a child what they can do for themselves,” parents shared ways to gradually hand over responsibility – packing bags, setting homework slots, or using apps and reminders.

Setting gentle goals: We discussed the idea of, “progress over perfection.” Families can try setting one small, shared goal per person, then check in weekly without pressure.

Takeaway messages

  • Celebrate small wins, sometimes just logging on, on time is a victory!
  • Reassure children (and ourselves) that nerves are normal.
  • Build confidence step by step, without the need for perfection.

We closed with this thought:

“Back to learning isn’t the finish line – it’s the starting point of growth.”

Save the date

Our next virtual coffee morning will be on Thursday 24th October with the theme: Supporting mental health and wellbeing at home. We’d love to see you there – no need to book, just drop in!
